About The Position

GEICO is looking to hire an Associate Counsel to defend lawsuits filed in California courts and other first party insurance defense. The position is with GEICO Staff Counsel located in Los Angeles, San Diego, Sacramento, and San Francisco. The role involves researching laws, preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda, and rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department. The Associate Counsel will also be responsible for preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, including depositions, examinations under oath, and defending assigned matters through trial or dispositive hearing.

Requirements

• 2-6+ years of experience in litigation experience on insurance/defense/and or personal injury
• Juris Doctor degree
• Admission to the California Bar
• Must be licensed in good standing to practice law in California and meet and maintain licensing requirements including mandatory Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements where applicable

• Civil litigation experience
• Insurance defense-related litigation experience
• Must be able to communicate in a professional manner in person, via telephone and written correspondence/email

Responsibilities

• Researching laws and preparing legal briefs, opinions, and memoranda
• Rendering opinions on liability, damages, and value as requested by the Claims Department
• Preparing and handling pleadings, motions, and discovery, to include depositions/examinations before trial and examinations under oath
• Defending by trial or dispositive hearing, all matters assigned, as applicable
• Documenting files in a clear, concise, professional written manner
• Following complex instructions, resolving conflicts or facilitating conflict resolution
• Strong organization/priority setting and multi-tasking skills
• Learning and applying large amounts of technical and procedural information
• Traveling as required, including but not limited to attending trials, hearings, depositions, management meetings and conferences
