About The Position

The Office of the Mayor has a current vacancy for a part-time Council Assistant. The position will provide staff support to the Mayor by performing research, analysis of data, problem and dispute resolution, receiving and responding to community contacts, conducting special studies, and attending events. The City of Chula Vista is located at the center of one of the richest cultural, economic and environmentally diverse zones in the United States. It is the second-largest City in San Diego County with a population of over 280,000. Chula Vista boasts more than 52 square miles of coastal landscape, canyons, rolling hills, mountains, quality parks, and miles of trails. Chula Vista is a leader in conservation and renewable energy, has outstanding public schools, and has been named one of the top safest cities in the country. This recruitment is for a part-time, non-benefited position limited to 919 hours of employment in a fiscal year (July 1 through June 30) with an average of less than 30 service hours per work week. Unclassified hourly employees are paid on an hourly basis and shall not be eligible for benefits nor be subject to Civil Service Rules. Although hourly employees are at-will, they are still subject to all other City policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience performing administrative support work for elected officials or other high-ranking executives in the public or private sector
  • Training equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major course work in public administration, political science, communications, public relations or a related field
  • Knowledge of local government structure and procedure
  • Knowledge of analytical methods and their application
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Knowledge of computer equipment and software applications related to assignment
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports, press releases, and speeches
  • Ability to organize, participate in and implement special events
  • Ability to operate computer equipment and Microsoft software applications related to assignment
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner
  • Ability to attend Community events in the evening and weekends

Responsibilities

  • Provide staff support to Mayor
  • Collect and compile data
  • Conduct surveys
  • Prepare reports on assigned activities
  • Contact citizens
  • Work with the public to determine desired services
  • Work with governmental and other departments or agencies to assist City residents
  • Develop and coordinate special events to enhance community awareness of City services
  • Inform City residents of public and private services available
  • Attend events, meetings and answer routine correspondence
  • Attend events to support the Mayor or on behalf of the Mayor
  • Provide community reports
  • Assist with the creation of graphics for social media, posting, editing for all social media platforms
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service
  • Performs related duties as assigned
