About The Position

This Union Corrosion Technician position is based in East Hartford, CT, within Avangrid, a leading global energy company focused on renewable energy and the energy transition. The role involves ensuring and promoting safety while performing and interpreting various cathodic protection readings in compliance with industry codes and standards. Key aspects include timely troubleshooting of cathodic protection systems, creating and following through on remediation work orders, and collaborating with other utilities to maintain cathodic protection at franchise gate stations. The technician is also responsible for quality assurance checks on work performed by others, maintenance of rectifiers, tools, and equipment, and conducting atmospheric inspections of exposed piping. The role requires providing corrosion control support to other departments and participating in regulatory audits. For transmission and high-pressure distribution gas mains, the technician will perform annual CIS, work with engineering on HCA piping testing, assist R.O.W. crews, and respond to arcing or stray voltage conditions on gas lines, all while assisting the Corrosion Control Supervisor as needed.

Requirements

  • High School/GED with the completion of the relevant progression program and 2 years relevant experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • NACE CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester) or greater.
  • Past experience with use of hand tools
  • Gas Pipeline experience
  • Troubleshooting experience
  • 2 years field work of pipeline cathodic protection / corrosion control
  • Successful completion of all current Operational Qualifications.
  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Ability to read Infrastructure mapping and/or electric schematics
  • Mathematics aptitude
  • Proficient in use of Company computer systems
  • Knowledge and concepts of Electrical Theory

Responsibilities

  • Responsible to not only work safely, but to promote a safe work ethic and behavior.
  • Responsible to perform and interpret required readings (i.e. annual test points, isolated services, casings, bonds, foreign crossings) in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Responsible for timely cathodic protection troubleshooting (i.e. low systems, shorted conditions)
  • Responsible for timely creation of remediation work orders (i.e. install anodes, clear short, install insulator, repair / replace test station). Follows through with necessary departments to ensure timely completion.
  • Works closely with peers from other utilities to maintain CP at franchise gate stations.
  • Responsible for performance of QA checks on reads performed by others
  • Responsible for troubleshooting and maintenance of rectifiers
  • Responsible for maintenance of tools and equipment.
  • Responsible for atmospheric inspections for bridge crossings, above ground piping that is dept. responsibility, or other exposed piping a needed in accordance with procedures.
  • Understands use of unique equipment and tools used purposely for Cathodic Protection measures.
  • Provides corrosion control-related support to other Departments as needed for maintenance / repair.
  • Participates as needed in regulatory audits to ensure success.
  • Performs annual CIS of scheduled piping.
  • Works with Engineering on annual testing of scheduled HCA piping.
  • Works with R.O.W. crews with follow up investigations or maintenance.
  • Responds to arcing or stray voltage conditions on gas lines.
  • Assist with troubleshooting responsibilities as required by Corrosion control Supervisor.
