Novelis•Kennesaw, GA
•Onsite

About The Position

Novelis is seeking a graduate student to join its Surfaces and Corrosion team at the Global Research and Technology Center in Kennesaw, Georgia, for an approximately seven-month co-op beginning in May 2027. The co-op will support research into advanced aluminum alloys for automotive and packaging applications, with a focus on improving durability and sustainability. The selected candidate will contribute to environmental fracture research and testing, including developing test methods, maintaining existing equipment, designing and conducting experiments, and analyzing fracture mechanics data. The role also offers experience in corrosion science, environmental fracture mechanisms, experimental design and statistical analysis, aluminum alloy characterization, and industrial R&D project execution.

Requirements

  • Be a graduate student in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to work safely in an industrial R&D setting.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and experience in environmental fracture testing, including slow strain rate testing (SSRT), direct current potential drop (DCPD), and double cantilever beam fracture (DCB).
  • Experience in design of experiments (DOE) and data interpretation.
  • Currently authorized to work in the United States for any employer; visa sponsorship is not available, and candidates must not need current or future sponsorship.

Nice To Haves

  • Research experience in environmental fracture of aluminum, such as stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue, or hydrogen embrittlement.
  • Knowledge of corrosion methods, including setup, instrumentation, and interpretation of results.
  • Specific experience related to aluminum products.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of in-house environmental fracture test methods for aluminum alloys.
  • Upkeep and maintain existing environmental test frames.
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate the environmental fracture performance of aluminum alloys.
  • Interpret fracture mechanics data and establish correlations between alloy characteristics, such as temper and gauge, corrosion properties, and environmental performance.

Benefits

  • Combined housing and relocation stipend for out-of-state co-ops or co-ops outside an extended radius for select positions.
  • Competitive pay.
  • Employee benefits with choices, high quality, and affordability.
