About The Position

Leads, directs, coaches, and supervises a team of Corrections Officers on an assigned shift in a 24-hour adult correctional facility within the Department of Corrections.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent. Certified diploma or transcript verifying equivalent credits is required.
  • A combination of two (2) years of experience working with justice involved youth or adult offender clients in a program or facility environment, with progressive responsibilities.
  • One (1) year of supervisory work experience.
  • Professional references are required to verify the related work experience.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess first aid, CPR, and physical restraint certification or the ability to acquire within initial period of employment.
  • Per Sedgwick County Policy, this is a driving level position that requires a valid US driver’s license without restrictions and current proof of automobile insurance.
  • Pass legal background check, Child and Adult Abuse & Neglect Central Registry checks, KCJIS Security Policy (fingerprint) check, and pre-employment screens.
  • Must also meet the required conditions contained in KSA 65-516 and KAR 28-4-356.

Nice To Haves

  • A combination of four (4) years of experience working with justice involved youth or adult clients in a program or facility environment, with progressive responsibilities.
  • Two (2) years’ supervisory work experience.
  • Associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or closely related field. Transcript verifying education credits is required.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff; assign coverage, work, priorities, and projects; and evaluate performance.
  • Assist with interviewing, hiring, and lead new-staff orientation and training.
  • Review and approve timecards.
  • Set priorities and ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and best practices.
  • Address violations, provide corrective guidance, clarify expectations, and document follow-up as needed.
  • Evaluate staff, ensure training, and provide feedback on required knowledge and standards.
  • Serve as the facility policy and procedure expert; lead by example.
  • Ensure client and staff safety, care, and security through protocol enforcement, behavior-change support, and prosocial leadership.
  • Process admissions and releases; verify court records and status; and assist with intake and orientation.
  • Schedule and facilitate searches and tornado, fire, and other emergency drills.
  • Ensure required client substance-use testing is conducted.
  • Conduct area and room searches to maintain a contraband-free facility.
  • Ensure medication procedures and required medical documentation are followed.
  • Review reports and communications for accuracy and operational awareness.
  • Investigate incidents, determine consequences, and ensure documentation and follow-through.
  • Ensure staff monitor clients, enforce rules and expectations, maintain room cleanliness, and complete head counts.
  • Oversee facility supplies and client property for clients who are AWOL or removed from the program.
  • Assign location checks and maintain accurate client room, bed, and program-level records.
  • Update behavior information, prepare required behavior and status reports, and monitor client activities.
  • Complete required reports, behavioral notes, logbooks, team meetings, and shift-turnover communications.
  • Prepare and maintain reports and statistics.
  • Conduct facility inspections and quality checks; document and facilitate corrective actions.
