This is an internal posting only open to current Snohomish County Sheriff's Office Corrections Deputies. External candidates will not be considered. The basic function of this role is to supervise booking, releasing, and security work on an assigned shift within the Snohomish County Jail. The Sergeant plans, schedules, assigns duties, supervises, and evaluates the work of subordinate Corrections Deputies and staff. They participate in and make recommendations regarding the selection, discipline, and termination of subordinate employees and may assume the responsibility of the Lieutenant in their absence. When assigned, the Sergeant directs the training of all new staff members and assumes responsibility for requests for special training from office administration. They evaluate and counsel Corrections Deputies in the performance of their duties and conduct on-the-job training for employees in coordination with the Training Unit. The Sergeant reviews jail records and logs, including records for court appearances, and makes decisions and approves all questionable bookings, including the review of medical staff's screening recommendations. They make decisions and approve releases of inmates, review all written reports submitted by Corrections Deputies and other jail staff concerning unusual occurrences or rule violations, and report unusual incidents, when appropriate, to supervisors on other shifts or in other agencies. The Sergeant ensures that the work environment is maintained in a safe and healthful condition, arranges for any needed maintenance work or removal of safety hazards, and requisitions supplies and equipment as needed for the work of the jail. They interpret jail policies and direct action taken during emergencies or unusual circumstances. The Sergeant intercedes and makes decisions involving problems between inmates, families, other law enforcement agencies, and staff under supervision, and recommends modifications or changes in jail policy and implements new operating procedures and other administrative changes. They coordinate inmate transports with courts, hospitals, and other agencies, arrange for hospital and special security guards, and clear documentation for appearance, transfer, and final release of inmates. The Sergeant regularly communicates with jail medical staff and may perform all the duties of a Corrections Deputy. Performs related duties as required.
