About The Position

The Broward Sheriff's Office is seeking Certified Detention Deputies/Corrections Officers. This role involves the supervision and control of detainees, enforcement of security rules and regulations, and providing services and information to detainees. The position requires the ability to perform physically demanding tasks and maintain order within the detention facility. A hiring incentive of $5,000 is offered for eligible candidates. The agency also offers condensed testing for certified applicants to expedite the hiring process.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • United States Citizen at time of application.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must possess a valid Basic Recruit Certificate for Corrections from the State of Florida Commission on Criminal Justice Standards and Training.
  • Must not have been convicted of any felony.
  • Must not have been convicted of any perjury or a false statement charge as an adult.
  • Must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation.
  • Must successfully pass the PHYSICAL AGILITY test.
  • Must possess and maintain throughout employment, a valid Florida driver license without any restrictions affecting job performance.
  • Must submit a Certified Department of Motor Vehicles "entire" driving history.
  • If claiming Veteran's Preference, must provide a DD214 Member 4 or Service form.

Nice To Haves

  • Currently certified and working in the position of a sworn Detention Deputy/Corrections Officer (for Modified Agility Test eligibility).
  • Attended a comparable corrections academy either in the state of Florida or any other state (for Modified Agility Test eligibility).
  • Verifiable proof of taking a Physical Agility Test that is measurable and comparable with the current Physical Agility Test administered by the Broward College Institute of Public Safety (for Modified Agility Test eligibility).

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and controls detainees.
  • Enforces security rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Provides services and information to detainees.
  • Maintains order and ensures the safety and security of detainees, the public, and personnel.
  • Conducts searches for concealed weapons and contraband.
  • Places detainees in cells, issues supplies, and transports laundry and bedding.
  • Escorts detainees for various activities such as court appearances, medical treatments, and visitation.
  • Complies with booking and release orders and procedures.
  • Inspects mail and packages for contraband.
  • Supervises detainee work details and recreational activities.
  • Maintains accurate counts of detainees and records.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding detainee status and facility procedures.
  • Secures detention facility keys and receives status and incident reports.
  • Operates an agency vehicle when appropriate.
  • Maintains minimum training and standards of an accredited certification institution.
  • Responds to crime scenes or other critical incidents, maintaining physical abilities consistent with CJSTC standards.
