About The Position

Enhances public safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia and Department of Corrections staff and inmates, by meeting re-entry objectives and by providing effective security services, programming, custody, and control of adult inmates in a major correctional facility. This position contributes to the public safety mission by directing ongoing security operations in an institutional setting. It coordinates and reviews the work of security supervisors on all shifts to ensure a safe, secure, and productive environment. The role leads, develops, counsels, and disciplines staff. It conducts periodic inspections to ensure compliance with security post audit, policies and procedures governing all aspects of institutional operations. The position assists the Warden and Assistant Warden in long-term planning, and development of security and contingency plans. It interacts with institutional, regional, divisional, and departmental management, staff, visitors, inmates, and the public to maintain orderly and secure operations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Certification.
  • Extensive experience in the supervision of corrections staff.
  • Experience working as a Department of Corrections (DOC) Watch Commander or Shift Commander.
  • Working experience developing post orders, interpreting, and explaining written policies and procedures to staff.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and counsel staff.
  • Considerable working knowledge of physical control of inmates, self-defense, first aid procedures, radio communications, and evidence seizure and control.

Nice To Haves

  • LEAD Graduate or equivalent applicable experience or training.
  • Working experience with Evidence Based Practices.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook programs.
