About The Position
The Corrections Food Service Instructor at the Department of Corrections’ State Correctional Institution in Chester provides instruction and supervision to inmates in food preparation and service. The role supports vocational training and daily kitchen responsibilities while ensuring meals are prepared safely, accurately, and on time. The instructor teaches practical food service skills and helps maintain a structured, productive environment in the correctional facility. This is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with rotating days off. The position is onsite and does not offer telework. Selected candidates who are new to Commonwealth employment start at an annual salary of $49,010 before taxes. Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania, is required. The position requires passing a background investigation and meeting CJIS compliance requirements.
Requirements
- Two years of experience in food preparation, production, or service of a variety of complete meal menus in an institutional food service operation, food catering service, restaurant, or similar large-scale food production operation, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania.
- Ability to perform the essential job functions.
- Must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
Responsibilities
- Teach inmates food preparation, baking, food service, and safe use of kitchen tools and equipment.
- Oversee meal preparation according to recipes and ensure meals are served on time.
- Inspect food service areas and equipment for compliance with sanitation and safety standards.
- Receive, store, and track food supplies using first-in, first-out procedures.
- Assign tasks to inmate workers, monitor their performance, and maintain records.
- Maintain the care, custody, and control of inmates during work activities.
