About The Position

The Corrections Counselor 2 with the Department of Corrections (DOC) is a chance to inspire real change for people who are working to rebuild their lives. You guide inmates as they face tough challenges and learn stronger, healthier ways to move forward. Your support helps create a positive and focused rehabilitative setting at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Forest. Requirements

  • Successful completion of the Corrections Counselor 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration) training program
  • One year of professional counseling or casework experience in a correctional facility, and a bachelor’s degree including 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training that includes one year of professional counseling or casework experience in a correctional facility and 18 college credits in any combination of sociology, counseling, psychology, social work, corrections, criminal justice, or a related field
  • Obtain Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) and Pennsylvania Justice Network (JNET) certification within two months of employment and maintain certification for the duration of employment in this job
  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA
  • Meet the PA residency requirement
  • Be able to perform essential job functions
  • Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements

Responsibilities

  • Meet new inmates within 24 to 48 hours to explain institutional procedures and identify immediate concerns
  • Develop comprehensive plans by combining interview notes with psychological test results, classification information, and pre-sentence investigations
  • Visit inmates in housing units and provide individual and group counseling to support adjustment, promote positive behavior, and address emotional problems
  • Prepare documentation for community corrections placement and assist inmates in creating home and employment plans
  • Work with parole agents to complete required summaries and recommendations
  • Assist inmates with daily living needs and adapt guidance to unique behavior and adjustment issues
