About The Position

The Correctional Officer III position is located at the Eastern Region Office in Pitt County. This posting is for four (4) Regional Correctional Transportation Officer positions that will report directly to the Regional Security Coordinator in the Eastern Region Office, located in Greenville, NC, Pitt County. These officers will serve the geographic area of the region as needed to transport offender(s) in departmental vehicles. These positions will be 8-hour shifts, Monday-Friday, with possible call-back. The start time will vary depending on the transportation trip schedule. Flexibility and availability to work weekends, holidays, and possible evenings based on operational needs are required. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees, responsible for safeguarding lives and property, and the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. The department includes state prisons, probation/parole services, and other divisions focused on rehabilitation and reentry.

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Responsibilities

  • Exercising independent decision making within established policies and procedures due to the physical separation from supervisory personnel.
  • Providing custody supervision of offender(s) in their custody and control.
  • Enforcing rules and regulations for safety, health, and protection of offenders.
  • Performing searches of persons, places and objects.
  • Performing rescue functions to include CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas and using fire equipment (fire hoses, extinguishers, and breathing apparatuses).
  • Establishing and maintaining control of violent or uncooperative offenders.
  • Being able to defend oneself or others against violent attacks.
  • Loading, unloading, aiming, and firing handguns, shotguns, and rifles at the required level of proficiency.
  • Maintaining a professional demeanor at all times, including during times of mental and verbal abuse by offenders.
  • Effectively communicating with offenders, staff, and members of the public.
  • Performing other duties assigned by the Region Office.
