About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Four vacancies are located at the Eastern Region Office in Greenville, NC, and will report directly to the Region Security Coordinator. This position will be responsible for managing and supervising the transportation section assigned to the Eastern Region office.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Providing guidance and direction to ensure custody, security and control of offenders who are being transported between designated locations.
  • Ensuring incarcerated individuals are transported between various locations to include, but not limited to, jails, courts, prisons, and medical facilities, while maintaining the security and well-being of the offender throughout the transport process.
  • Ensuring Transportation Officers are fully aware of the approved level of independent decision-making authority within established guidelines.
  • Recommending and implementing standard operating procedures for the transportation of offenders within the region.
  • Coordinating the transportation of offenders within the Region to ensure transport is achieved in a timely manner and within policy guidelines.
  • Overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Developing schedules to ensure transportation requirements are met, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Completing departmental reports (i.e., disciplinary, use of force, incident, grievances, etc.) within designated time frames.
  • Conducting daily inspections in the assigned area of responsibility and reporting any irregularities and initiating corrective action, as necessary.
  • Ensuring shift coverage, implementing operational procedures, and ensuring safety and security procedures are enforced.
