Requirements

  • Two years of experience as a Correctional Officer II with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry.
  • A letter of recommendation from the unit Deputy Warden is required by the close of the announcement.
  • PERFORMANCE EVALUATION – Must receive a rating of meets expectations or better.
  • SUSPENSION – ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity during the one year period from the date the incident that caused the suspension occurred or the incident was reported by the employee, whichever occurred last.
  • VOLUNTARY DEMOTIONS – Employees accepting a voluntary demotion shall be required to remain in the classification/position requested for a period of at least two years before being considered for appointment to any other position.
  • DEMOTIONS (DISCIPLINARY) – Any employee who has been demoted one level shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for two years from the date of the demotion. If demoted more than one level, the employee shall be ineligible to apply for a promotional opportunity for three years from the date of the demotion.
  • Each promotion or different position with the same employer must be listed separately on the resume and must include adequate work history identifying experience, duties, qualifications, selective requirements, and/or preferences must be reflected on the resume in order to receive applicable credit.
  • Applicants who achieve or exceed a passing score on the oral board interview will have their names placed on the Register.
  • Employees who are offered a position and have been out of security positions for more than two years will be required to attend COTA training.
  • If you are currently working outside of the correctional series you will have to undergo the correctional officer hire procedures. The procedures may include medical/physical, psychological evaluation, updated background investigation, and the completion of the Correctional Officer Training Academy.
  • Knowledge of: Federal, State, and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and due process governing the security, order, and discipline of inmates; principles and practices of supervision, work leadership, and training; methods, techniques, and practices of maintaining the security, order and discipline of staff and inmates; methods and techniques of self-defense, and use of weapons and related defense/control equipment; vernacular used by inmates; methods, techniques and practices of the paraprofessional counseling for inmates; portable and stationary, two-way radio networks used to communicate inside an institution or with other institutions; methods and techniques of performing administrative work appropriate to the assignment.
  • Skill in/Ability to: Applying and interpreting Federal, State, and agency laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures governing the security, order, and discipline of inmates; applying the methods and techniques of supervision; determining staff assignments for prescribed security and order; training staff in the proper methods of security, use of force and paraprofessional counseling; interpreting the vernacular used by inmates; training in the proper use of weapons and related defense and control equipment; basic first aid measures, and use of devices for self-protection from serious health disorders; verbal and written communications as required by the duties and assignments in a correctional setting; interpersonal relationships within a correctional setting; maintaining a calm and even temperament during emergency situations; performing the administrative work activities appropriate to the assignment.
  • A current Arizona driver's license appropriate to the assignment is required at the time of appointment.
  • Selected candidates must successfully complete the seven-week Correctional Officer Training Academy.
  • All newly hired State employees are subject to and must successfully complete the Electronic Employment Eligibility Verification Program (E-Verify).

Responsibilities

  • Assign/reassign staff to maintain prescribed security, order, and discipline during a designated shift.
  • Train and evaluate staff.
  • Prepare and submit reports of recommendations.
  • Supervise a designated shift of Correctional Officers II’s in an adult institution.
  • Inspect areas for safety of staff and use of vehicles.
  • Serve as coordinator/monitor of inmate discipline.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations of incidents and notify officials.
  • Perform a variety of administrative duties within a specialized area, requiring technical skills in a specific field of expertise such as: in the Recruiting Unit for Selection and Hiring; Correctional Officer Training Academy, etc.
  • Devise a work schedule for staff on a periodic basis.
  • Resolve technical or work procedure problems and questions presented by staff.
  • Conduct inspections of duty sites to determine any problems or potential hazards to staff; alert staff and assure proper corrective actions are taken on an unscheduled basis.
  • Maintain logs or records of inmates entering or leaving a specified area; alert authorities when discrepancies in counts occur.
  • Attend and contribute as an active member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Use hand-held or stationary radio systems to communicate internally, or by network with other institutions and law enforcement officials.
  • Receive essential information at the beginning of shift; hold briefing of staff, answer questions, and resolve problems.
  • Write summary reports following each shift of duty.
  • Confer with superiors, presenting and resolving difficult problems or questions, discussing plans and actions to be taken, and making decisions.
  • Write preliminary investigative reports of incidents involving staff and/or inmates; assist official investigative teams by securing areas and maintaining security and order.
  • Attend meetings relating to inmates’ care and treatment; give and receive information, participate in problem-solving and decision-making; assure that subordinate staff are made aware of information.
  • Provide paraprofessional counseling or crisis intervention to inmates and staff to defuse a situation or assist in rehabilitative programs; write reports and notify treatment staff and officials.
  • Attend unit staff meetings as chairperson; direct discussions, explain, listen, guide problem-solving processes, resolve conflicts; participate in decision-making.
