About The Position

Responsible for the control, observation and supervision of inmates to ensure the maintenance of security, safety, operational rules, and policies of the Wilkin County Jail and Minnesota Department of Corrections.

Requirements

  • High School Degree or equivalent.
  • Valid MN Driver’s License.
  • CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Ability to effectively use a computer and various software programs.
  • Ability to handle critical situations in a calm manner.
  • The ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective public relations and deal with hostile or aggressive persons.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule forms.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and react quickly in emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises the inmate admission and release process.
  • Performs processes for collection and return of inmate money and property upon booking and release.
  • Creates and maintains inmate records, files, accounts and incident reports.
  • Identifies inmate medical needs and communicates with the medical staff.
  • Performs and logs inmate counts and well-being checks.
  • Inspects housing units and compound for security breaches and to ensure security and safety standards are met.
  • Monitors, supervises and approves inmate activities including visitation, texts, phone calls and approved recreational/educational activities.
  • Approves and reviews visitors.
  • Oversees and manages inmate participation in work release, inmate worker and furloughs.
  • Organizes and directs inmate management in housing units.
  • Manages and resolves difficult or volatile inmate conflicts including inmates who are violent, intoxicated or in mental health crisis.
  • Observes inmate activities that could be harmful of self or others and communicates to jail staff to ensure safety.
  • Enforces rules and regulations governing facility security, inmate conduct and inmate accountability.
  • Communicates recommendations regarding department policies and safety concerns to improve efficiency and safety of the facility.
  • Escorts and transports inmates.
  • Performs inmate searches and drug screens as indicated and checks mail for contraband.
  • Responds to emergency situations including CPR, first aid, escape attempts, evacuations, etc.
  • Testifies at hearings and in court.
  • Attends continuing education and training opportunities.
  • Maintains required certifications.
  • Other duties as apparent or assigned.
