About The Position

The Correctional Sergeant III position is located at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, North Carolina, which houses approximately 778 medium or close custody male offenders. This role involves first-line supervision of Correctional Officers III's in close-custody institutions with restrictive and controlled housing. The position assigns lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post, oversees officer activities and performance, and ensures the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained. Employees arrange work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implement operational procedures, and ensure rules and regulations are followed according to policy. Positions report directly to a Correctional Lieutenant III and/or the Correctional Housing Unit Manager. The role ensures staff is fully trained and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are followed. It also maintains facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance and the health and safety of offenders. The Sergeant gives direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies, and may lead staff in carrying out tactical assignments. Responsibilities include responding to emergency situations, searching for escaped offenders, and transporting offenders. The role conducts and/or supervises searches of offenders, their living quarters, and work areas for contraband, and investigates and takes action regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints. The Sergeant prepares and reviews a variety of reports, completes annual performance evaluations, and assists in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline. Staff briefing sessions are also conducted, and other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Produce a negative drug screening result.
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must report or stay over during adverse weather events.
