About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff, as well as probation/parole officers. The Division of Institutions manages the daily operations of all state-operated prison facilities across North Carolina, providing safety, security, and rehabilitative services. Lumberton Correctional Institution is a medium custody facility housing up to 788 male offenders.

Requirements

  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302).
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Produce a negative drug screening result.
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer OR Two years of experience as Correctional Officer II OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Assigning lower level custody staff to an area or post.
  • Evaluating and overseeing officer activities and performance.
  • Ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders are maintained.
  • Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage.
  • Implementing operational procedures.
  • Ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Ensuring that staff are fully trained.
  • Ensuring proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections.
  • Ensuring compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, and health and safety of offenders.
  • Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, distress codes, escapes, transporting offenders, searches, and in emergency situations.
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas, and work areas for contraband.
  • Assisting with facility interviews.
  • Preparing and reviewing reports.
  • Completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.
