About The Position

This position is located at Eastern Correctional Institution. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

  • Must have effective verbal & written communication with staff, offenders, and the general public.
  • Be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

  • Knowledge of services available to individuals from the community and other public and private programs.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe/ secure manner at any time of day and in varying weather/ road conditions.
  • Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive.
  • Conduct continuous visual/ audio surveillance of assigned work area.
  • Accurately operate various office machines, prepare written reports/ forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources.
  • Demonstrate/ instruct inmates in the proper safe use of tools/equipment/supplies.
  • Review, analyze & evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation and personal observation.
  • Perform crisis intervention/ routine counseling including suicide prevention.
  • Effectively train, observe, evaluate, and supervise subordinate staff in duties/ responsibilities.
  • Account for supplies, equipment, and develop/implement/manage correctional programs.
