About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers. While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a human services or criminal justice field from an appropriately accredited institution AND one year of experience in corrections or related work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented knowledge of internal and/or external services available to offenders.
  • Documented 12 months (1 year) of correctional program experience.
  • Documented knowledge of case management practices, or supportive counseling techniques and/or interviewing techniques for intake assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Developing, implementing, and maintaining one or more major and broad programs for offenders. (Primary programs areas are offender classifications, correctional programs (work release, incentive wage, study release, home leave, adult basic education, volunteer programs, religion, and recreation) and supportive counseling.
  • Contacting community agencies to enrich programs, establishing new programs, and conducting home leave and work release investigations.
  • Monitoring effectiveness of community volunteer workers assigned to programs activities.
  • Communicating effectively in verbal and written form with facility staff, offenders, and the general public.
  • Reviewing, analyzing, and evaluating various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation.
  • Working under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive as well as crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention.
  • Training, observing, evaluating, and supervising effectively subordinate staff in their duties and responsibilities.
