About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is a large state agency with over 14,000 employees responsible for the care, custody, and supervision of adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff, as well as probation/parole officers. The agency's mission is to safeguard and preserve lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation. The Correctional Sergeant III position reports to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager and/or Correctional Lieutenant III at a multi-custody male correctional facility. This role provides first-line supervision to Correctional Officers III in a close-custody institution with restrictive and controlled housing, assigns lower-level custody staff to posts, oversees officer activities and performance, and ensures the custody, security, and welfare of offenders. The position also involves arranging work schedules for shift coverage, implementing standard operational procedures, and ensuring adherence to departmental policies and regulations.

Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND three years of experience as a Correctional Officer, OR two years of experience as a Correctional Officer III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
