About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting to the Business Officer at a multi-custody male correctional facility, this position is responsible for the supervision of subordinate HVAC staff in the Maintenance Department.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND up to three years of journey level experience in the installation, maintenance or repair of air conditioning chillers, air handling, chilled water distribution and control systems including one year at the journey level; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Requires current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations part 82, subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Considerable knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Documented experience supervising and/or training subordinates.

Responsibilities

  • Performing installation, maintenance, and repair work of air-conditioning and refrigeration units and associated air handling.
  • Maintaining chilled water distribution system.
  • Maintaining control systems at a State Institution through supervision of a staff of HVAC mechanics engaged in this type of work.
  • Designing smaller air-conditioning systems or design modifications to larger systems.
  • Designing modifications to existing system along with reviewing plans and specification for contracted work.
  • Reviewing the work of outside contractors.
  • Performing work independently under the supervision of a plant engineer which is evaluated through effective and efficient equipment operation.
  • Reviewing and critiquing plans and specifications for air-conditioning systems.
  • Training and supervising other workers.
