About The Position

This class is involved in supervising the activities of trades, mechanical and/or semi-skilled and unskilled workers, scheduling preventive maintenance routine duties, and work of a difficult and complex nature; determining work priorities and providing solutions for unique and complex assignments. Essential functions are fundamental, core functions common to all positions in the class series and are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties for any one position in the class. Since class specifications are descriptive and not restrictive, incumbents can complete job duties of similar kind not specifically listed here. Schedules on-going preventative or routine maintenance duties. Assigns, supervises and participates in work involving all phases of painting, carpentry, plumbing, installation, repair and maintenance of systems and equipment, and other related duties. Inspects job site, determines courses of action, directs staff and reviews assignments. Schedules assignments, estimates cost, time and materials. Maintains records and prepares reports. May be required to diagram structural and/or mechanical modifications and heating work. Maintains security; participates in cell, building and grounds searches for contraband, weapons and escapees as required.

Requirements

Three years experience in performing work in a variety of trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
Three years experience in operating and maintaining a variety of equipment, hand and power tools used in trades fields such as plumbing, carpentry, painting or HVAC.
Six months experience in estimating cost, time and materials for projects.
Six months experience in interpreting blueprints, schematics or technical drawings.
Knowledge of interpreting safety and building codes, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Knowledge of staff supervision acquired through course work, academic training, training provided through an employer, or performing as a lead worker overseeing the work of others; OR supervising staff which may include planning, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating the work of others; OR supervising through subordinate supervisors a group of professional, technical, and clerical employees.
Possession of a valid Driver's License (not suspended, revoked or cancelled, or disqualified from driving).

Nice To Haves

Prior to institutional assignment, candidates must successfully complete all phases of an eleven- week Correctional Officer Basic Course. This course is administered by the Department of Correction Steven R. Floyd Sr. Training Academy. Coursework includes physical, classroom and hands-on training. Instruction is provided in the areas of inmate supervision, defensive tactics, riot control, weapons, report writing and emergency medical training.
