About The Position

A Correctional Maintenance Officer I Maintenance Mechanic is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. The main purpose of a Correctional Maintenance Officer Grounds Supervision position is the landscaping, cultivation, and structural upkeep of the facility's outdoor areas, the instruction and supervision of incarcerated individuals assigned to the grounds crew, and the maintenance of perimeter custody and security.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.
• Two years of maintenance mechanic experience.

Nice To Haves

• Experience and ability to perform a variety of general building repairs and maintenance such as interior and exterior painting, electrical, plumbing or mechanical maintenance, masonry and carpentry
• Experience and ability to periodically inspects equipment, makes adjustments and repairs, and performs preventive maintenance tasks
• Experience and ability to repair and maintain machinery such as motors, engines, compressors or other mechanical equipment

Responsibilities

• Maintaining control and discipline among incarcerated individuals.
• Conducting searches for contraband items.
• Administering verbal or written disciplinary actions to incarcerated individuals for any violations of conduct standards.
• Enforcing safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations.
• Assigning installation maintenance or repair tasks to designated incarcerated individuals performing at various levels of proficiency in the trade.
• Training and instructing incarcerated individuals regarding methods and techniques, using tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
• Inspecting and approving/disapproving all work performed by incarcerated individuals for adherence to quality standards.
• Estimating time, materials and supplies needed to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks.
• Orders supplies and materials needed; keeping records of tools, supplies and materials used.
• Personally performs certain installation, maintenance or repair tasks on plumbing infrastructure.
• Planning and implementing appropriate procedures.
• Operating hand and power tools and equipment needed.
• Escorting third party vendors and inspecting completed work assignment.
