A Correctional Maintenance Officer I Refrigeration Mechanic is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions. The main purpose of a Correctional Maintenance Officer Refrigeration Mechanic position is the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems, the instruction and supervision of incarcerated individuals assigned to the shop, and the maintenance of facility custody and security.

Requirements

Graduation from an accredited high school diploma or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.
Two years of refrigeration mechanic experience.
U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
Must be at least 21 years of age
A completed background investigation
Oral interview
Physical examination.
Must meet the guidelines for certification by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.

Nice To Haves

Experience and ability to ensure compliance with standard trade practices and codes on air systems used in heating, ventilating, and refrigeration
Experience and ability to troubleshoot and perform work in operation, repair and installation of air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems which may use Freon chilled water for air cooling means and air or water for condenser means
Experience and ability to utilize diagnostic equipment to control and measure air flow, room air changes and room pressurization

Responsibilities

Maintains control and discipline among incarcerated individuals workers; conducts searches for contraband items; administers verbal or written disciplinary actions to incarcerated individuals for any violations of conduct standards.
Enforces safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations.
Physically restrains incarcerated individuals if necessary during fights or escape attempts.
Maintains continual count of incarcerated individuals assigned to work details supervised.
Assigns installation maintenance or repair tasks to designated incarcerated individuals performing at various levels of proficiency in the trade.
Train and instructs incarcerated individuals regarding methods and techniques, use of tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
Inspects and approves/disapproves all work performed by incarcerated individuals for adherence to quality standards.
Estimates time, materials, and supplies needed to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks.
Orders supplies and materials needed.
Keeps records of supplies and materials used; inventories materials on hand tools in use.
Personally performs certain installation, maintenance or repair tasks on refrigeration infrastructure.
Plans and implements appropriate procedures, operates hand and power tools and equipment needed; maintains record of time, supplies and materials required.
Escorts third party vendors and inspects completed work assignment.
Performs other related duties.
