Requirements

  • Two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation, and Reentry.
  • Must receive a rating of meets expectations or better on performance evaluations.
  • Completion of the Basic Leadership Academy is required by the time an offer is made.
  • Must maintain additional requirements to remain in the recruitment process.
  • Possession of and ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver's license appropriate to the assignment.
  • Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver's license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training.

Responsibilities

  • Assign/reassign staff to maintain security and control.
  • Serve in absence of Chief of Security as appropriate.
  • Effect actions to maintain safety and health of staff and inmates.
  • Evaluate staff and prepare reports of recommendations.
  • Serve as officer-in-charge of multiple shifts of Correctional Sergeants and Correctional Officer II’s performing security of inmates.
  • Schedule and assign/reassign staff to maintain prescribed security, order and discipline and provision of special/support services.
  • Inspect areas for safety of staff and inmates.
  • Assist in developing timely and effective work schedules, procedures and post orders.
  • Oversee the prescribed security, custody and control of the internal/external perimeters of an institution.
  • Evaluate and report on the security and communication networks.
  • Manage and supervise multiple units (shifts) of correctional sergeants and correctional Officer IIs in maintaining security, custody, and discipline of inmates at an adult institution.
  • Devise a work schedule for self and staff on a periodic basis.
  • Conduct inspections of security, safety, and sanitation conditions; detect problems; notify proper response team; write reports.
  • Develop duty (shift) rosters for staff; post and assure compliance; assign/reassign staff as required to maintain security and custody.
  • Interact with staff and inmate populations, providing paraprofessional counseling and crisis intervention; refer cases to appropriate care and treatment team; write reports from review by officials.
  • Write, or assist in writing, recommending security, custody, and disciplinary procedures and practices.
  • Serve as a member of inmates’ discipline and classification committees; review reports of discipline activity; make recommendations; coordinate with unit’s Inmates’ Classification Specialist and assure that inmates are provided due process and timely movements as indicated; brief security staff and assure compliance with instructions.
  • Provide or oversee appropriate training for security staff; direct and motivate staff to seek and attend in-service training to improve or enhance work.
  • Review and monitor security practices and procedures to ensure prescribed inmate accountability; recommend and assure changes, as appropriate.
  • Attend staff meetings of units; as chairperson, direct discussions; listen, resolve problems; lead and participate in decision-making.
  • Confer with superior, discuss problems, including employee and inmate relationships; assist in problem solving and decision-making.
