About The Position

The Correctional Lieutenant III position is located at Maury Correctional Institution in Hookerton, which houses approximately 1504 Offenders. Reporting to the Correctional Captain III at a multi custody correctional facility, this position predominantly and independently provides support to the Correctional Captain. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant, or two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Documented experience with report writing.
  • Documented knowledge of Prisons' policy and procedures or facility operations
  • Documented Supervisory skills in a Prison facility

Responsibilities

  • Providing supervision for subordinate staff, conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Completing, reviewing and maintaining employee time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms.
  • Conducting investigations as needed.
  • Accounting for persons & funds and ensuring that all assigned equipment is operational.
  • Providing daily inspection of offenders living areas, medical, kitchen areas and the facility as a whole to identify possible safety hazards and to ensure the operation is running smoothly.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff.
  • Conducting searches of staff, visitors and offenders for contraband and responding to emergency situations as needed.
  • Serving as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the facility when his/her rotation is working in the absence of the Correctional Captain.
