About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Complete the application in full.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision of subordinate staff at a multi-level male correctional facility.
  • Serve as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Correctional Captain.
  • Management of multiple locations, usually a medium/minimum custody facility managed within the scope of the larger facility.
  • Supervision of subordinate staff.
  • Conducting shift line-ups, making shift assignments, and inspecting all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Accounting for persons and funds.
  • Ensuring that all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training for subordinate staff.
  • Conducting internal investigations.
  • Developing operational plans, post orders, and Standard Operating Procedures.
