About The Position
The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!
Requirements
- Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
- Pass a criminal background check
- Produce a negative drug screening result
- Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
- Possess a valid driver’s license
Nice To Haves
- Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility
- Knowledge of facility operations
- Knowledge of Prisons' policy and procedures
- Documented report writing skills
Responsibilities
- Serve as Officer-in-Charge in the absence of the Correctional Captain.
- Manage multiple locations, usually a minimum custody facility managed within the scope of the larger facility, housing 1,000 inmates or more.
- Provide supervision of subordinate staff.
- Conduct shift line-ups, make shift assignments, and inspect all personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
- Inspect housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.
- Complete, review, and maintain time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
- Account for persons and funds.
- Ensure all assigned equipment is operationally ready.
- Identify training needs and coordinate delivery of training for subordinate staff.
- Conduct internal investigations.
- Develop operational plans, post orders, and Standard Operating Procedures.
