About The Position

Reporting to a Correctional Captain II, the position is involved in the planning, supervision, and coordination of activities at a medium custody male correctional facility. Responsibilities are primarily custodial in nature including serving as shift supervisor. This level is distinguished from Correctional Lieutenant I based on increased staffing totals, larger offender population totals and the complexity of the facility operation which may include some restrictive housing.

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant OR two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II ; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Documented experience with report writing.
  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as first line supervisor of Correctional Sergeant II’s.
  • Serving as Officer in Charge (OIC) in the absence of the Correctional Captain II.
  • Assisting with personnel actions, administrative affairs, officers' work schedules and coordinating activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population as needed.
  • Coordinating actions, such as employee leave requests, reviewing applications for employment, monthly reports, offender concerns or issues, and other activities relative to a correctional facility.
  • Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.
  • Reviewing investigations regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Serving on the offender classification committee.
  • Serving as incident commander with the authority to make decisions to use impact munition.
  • Preparing a variety of records and reports.
