About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Warren Correctional Institution is a mixed custody facility that houses minimum, medium, and close custody offenders. The current capacity of Warren CI is 809 male offenders, with most offenders being housed in medium custody. Offenders at Warren Correctional Institution may work at the Correction Enterprises Janitorial Products Plant, gaining marketable job skills and self-confidence participating in the manufacturing of soap and cleaning products. Offenders at Warren Correctional Institution may also participate in vocational training and educational courses to earn their HiSet/GED. They may also participate in the At Both Ends of the Leash (ABEL) program, which provides an opportunity for offenders to train service animals for individuals with medical diagnoses or physical disabilities.

Requirements

  • High School or General Education Development (GED) diploma AND two years six months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant , OR two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II ; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Documented experience with report writing.
  • Documented knowledge of Prison Policies and Procedures and/or Facility Operations.

Responsibilities

  • Supervising Correctional Lieutenant II’s.
  • Assisting with assigning and supervising custody staff, and coordinating administrative affairs within the facility.
  • Following NCDAC policies and procedures as well as performing on-the-job training.
  • Serving as the Officer-In-Charge (OIC) as needed.
  • Assisting with personnel actions, administrative affairs, officers' work schedule and coordinating activities involving discipline, security, and the welfare of the offender population.
  • Serving as shift supervisor as position is primarily custodial in nature.
  • Coordinating actions, such as employee leave requests, interviewing applicants for employment, monthly reports, offender concerns or issues, and other activities relative to a correctional facility.
  • Conducting inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers are alert that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.
  • Reviewing investigating regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Assisting in assessing, evaluating, and implementing employee discipline.
  • Preparing a variety of records and reports and performing other duties as required.
