About The Position

The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters! Reporting directly to the Correctional Captain II, this position will provide supervision for subordinate staff regarding their assigned tasks with male offenders in a medium custody state corrections facility.

Requirements

  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Sergeant
  • Two years of experience as a Correctional Sergeant II
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting shift line-up, making shift assignments and inspecting personnel to determine if they are physically and mentally capable of assuming an assigned post.
  • Conducting investigations and performing searches of persons, places, and objects.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations and administrative forms.
  • Making security inspections of the facility and grounds.
  • Monitoring posts to ascertain officers are alert, that discipline is being maintained, and that assignments are carried out properly.
  • Performing rescue functions to include CPR, basic first aid, physically removing people from dangerous areas, and using fire-fighting equipment to include fire hoses, extinguishers and breathing apparatus.
  • Identifying training needs and coordinating delivery of training to subordinate staff.
