About The Position

The Kentucky Department of Corrections, Division of Adult Institutions, operates 13 correctional facilities and works to protect the public while providing a safe, secure, and humane environment for staff and offenders, along with opportunities for offenders to develop skills that facilitate non-criminal behavior.

The Correctional Farm Crew Leader at Blackburn Correctional Complex supervises an inmate crew working in the institution’s farm operations area. The role includes directing farm work, promoting safe use of tools and equipment, maintaining equipment and records, and supporting seasonal farm and grounds activities. The position may involve caring for horses and supervising farm visitors as needed.

Requirements

• High school graduate.
• At least one year of agricultural or landscaping/groundskeeping experience.
• Additional education or training in agriculture or a related field may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must maintain any required licenses, certifications, or other credentials for the duration of employment.

Responsibilities

• Supervise inmates performing farm activities, including planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops; cleaning barns; cutting bushes; pulling plants; transplanting seedlings; and repairing fences.
• Direct inmates in the proper use of farm tools and enforce safety measures.
• Maintain preventative maintenance schedules for farm equipment and ensure equipment is properly cleaned and stored.
• Maintain records and logs of supplies and inmate work time.
• Assist with care of horses in the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation in the Farm Manager’s absence.
• Supervise visitors to the farm and Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation as needed.
• Lead the snow removal crew during inclement weather months and ensure salt is spread and roads are cleared.
• Assist with maintaining farm grass as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
