About The Position

The Warden III reports to the Assistant Eastern Region Director and holds executive responsibility for the total operation, security, and performance of a minimum- or medium-custody correctional facility. The position directs multiple operational divisions serving offenders and employees. This includes the functions such as custody, programs, fiscal administration, human resources, health services, food service, maintenance, training, and support operations. The role establishes facility priorities, directs subordinate managers, develops or modifies internal operating procedures, and makes facility-level decisions involving staffing, security risks, specialized programs, critical incidents, and compliance with departmental requirements.

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of supervisory, administrative, or consultative experience in corrections or related work OR High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and five years of supervisory experience at or above the Correctional Captain level OR An equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Nice To Haves

  • Proven experience directing subordinate managers responsible for major correctional, administrative, programmatic, or support-service operations.
  • Demonstrated experience establishing or modifying procedures, operational priorities, or corrective actions in response to security risks, staffing needs, or compliance concerns preferably for a correctional facility.
  • Documented experience managing specialized correctional programs, increased custody requirements, special populations, or similarly complex institutional operations.
  • Demonstrated experience making high-level decisions during emergencies, critical incidents, security threats, or other high-risk operational events.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the total operation, security, administration, and performance of the correctional facility.
  • Establish facility goals, operating priorities, internal procedures, or corrective actions based on institutional needs and departmental requirements.
  • Oversee custody, offender programs, fiscal administration, human resources, records, food service, maintenance, training, health services, behavioral health services, and on-site enterprises.
  • Direct subordinate managers responsible for major custody, administrative, programmatic, or support-service functions.
  • Allocate staffing, funding, equipment, and operational resources based on security risks, population needs, and facility priorities.
  • Oversee specialized programs or operations involving increased custody requirements, special populations, or complex offender-management needs.
  • Direct facility responses to emergencies, critical incidents, security threats, or other high-risk events.
  • Represent the facility in matters involving courts, law enforcement agencies, community organizations, volunteers, offender families, or other external partners.
