About The Position

This position is assigned to Maury Correctional Institution and will be located in a housing unit within the custody area. The role involves effective verbal and written communication with staff, offenders, and the public. The individual must be capable of defending themselves against attack, working under stressful conditions due to direct contact with incarcerated offenders who may become physically violent or verbally abusive, and conducting continuous visual and audio surveillance of the assigned work area. Responsibilities include operating office machines, preparing written reports and forms, instructing offenders on the safe use of tools and equipment, reviewing and analyzing documents and behavioral data, performing crisis intervention and routine counseling (including suicide prevention), accounting for supplies and equipment, and implementing and managing correctional programs. A thorough knowledge of prison policies and procedures, supportive counseling and interviewing techniques, and the ability to gather and evaluate information about an individual's past experience, training, attitude, social environment, and mental capabilities are essential. The role also requires working knowledge of correctional programs and community services, and the ability to develop, implement, coordinate, and supervise programs within established policies and procedures. Effective oral and written communication skills are also necessary.

Requirements

  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license
  • Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Human Services, Recreation or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution; or High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of custody experience within the North Carolina Department of Public Safety; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.

Responsibilities
