About The Position

The Correctional Captain III position is located at Eastern Correctional Institution in Maury, which houses approximately 477. This position will report to the Associate Warden of Custody and is involved in the planning, supervision, and coordination of activities at a male correctional facility. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and three years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant, or 2 years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant III; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Disseminating and interpreting rules, regulations, and orders from prison management.
  • Supervising Correctional Lieutenant III’s and serving as the Officer-In- Charge (OIC) as needed.
  • Conducting frequent inspections of housing units and other buildings, grounds, and posts to ascertain that officers/staff are alert, that discipline is maintained, and that assignments are being carried out effectively.
  • Implementing disciplinary measures with offenders and employees on infractions of rules and working to prevent or resolve disorders such as assaults, riots, fires, and escapes.
  • Investigating complaints of offenders and making reports of such actions to higher lever officials.
  • Preparing reports on offenders pertaining to their behaviors, attitudes, and work records for use on the offender classification committee.
