About The Position

Reporting to the Associate Warden for Custody, this position provides supervision of subordinate staff, is responsible for the custody and security of the facility, and the safety of the general public. The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Requirements

  • High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and two years and six months of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant Or Two years of experience as a Correctional Lieutenant II Or An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MUST be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
  • Meet Criminal Justice Standards requirements (12 NCAC 09G .0302)
  • Pass a criminal background check
  • Produce a negative drug screening result
  • Successfully complete medical and psychological evaluations
  • Possess a valid driver’s license

Nice To Haves

  • Documented supervisory skills in a prison facility.
  • Knowledge of facility operations.
  • Knowledge of Prisons’ policy and procedures.
  • Documented report writing skills.

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring that all custody staff assigned to the facility are physically and mentally capable of assuming a duty post.
  • Providing daily inspections of offender living, medical, and kitchen areas.
  • Ensuring weapons and other security equipment are inspected and in good working condition.
  • Supervising daily counts, reviewing staffing needs and Standard Operating Procedures to make suggestions for revisions, as needed.
  • Completing, reviewing, and maintaining time reports, duty rosters, leave schedules, performance evaluations, and administrative forms.
  • Conducting investigations and serving as the Officer-in-Charge (OIC), as required.
