Corporate Counsel
About The Position
As Corporate Counsel, Product, you will partner with AppFolio’s Product and Engineering teams to help shape and deliver real estate technology. You will embed legal guidance throughout the development lifecycle, from concept to launch, and translate complex regulatory requirements into clear, actionable solutions that enable business velocity. This is an individual-contributor role reporting to the Associate General Counsel, Product. The position advises on product development and applicable U.S. laws and regulations, develops scalable legal resources and processes, supports vendor and partner agreements, and provides guidance on technical matters such as data flows and API integrations.
Requirements
- JD degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Active license in good standing with at least one U.S. state bar.
- At least 5 years of sophisticated legal experience, primarily focused on product counseling within a U.S. technology or SaaS environment.
- Significant legal experience in one or more heavily regulated U.S. industries, such as FinTech, tenant screening, or B2C.
- Ability and willingness to adapt the role to the Legal team’s changing needs and the organization’s evolving priorities.
- Familiarity with the product development lifecycle and curiosity about how software is built.
- Ability to work independently and navigate ambiguity, including issues without established precedents or roadmaps.
- Ability to make sound, practical decisions and provide clear legal guidance with incomplete information or tight deadlines.
- Ability to communicate complex legal risks clearly and succinctly to product managers and engineers.
- Demonstrated preference for simple rather than complex solutions.
- Collaborative, low-ego approach to cross-functional work and building trust.
Responsibilities
- Advise Product and Engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle, from ideation through launch and beyond.
- Monitor evolving U.S. laws and regulations applicable to AppFolio’s products and services; research and translate complex requirements into actionable product requirements, particularly in heavily regulated areas such as consumer protection, AI, and tenant screening.
- Identify potential legal and regulatory hurdles early and propose practical solutions that support innovation and business momentum.
- Develop and maintain internal playbooks, product-specific user terms, and automated processes to help the Legal team scale with product growth.
- Collaborate with Procurement and Partnership teams to negotiate high-stakes agreements and product integrations.
- Maintain an understanding of AppFolio’s technical stack and advise on data flows and API integrations.
