About The Position

Martin Marietta is seeking an experienced, safety-focused Core Driller to join the Exploration Services team based in Garner, North Carolina. The Core Driller is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation, setup, operation, maintenance, and demobilization of company drilling equipment and support vehicles during aggregate exploration and reserve development projects throughout the United States. This position supports both surface and underground mining operations and plays a critical role in obtaining high-quality geological data used to quantify and qualify mineral reserves. The Core Driller serves as the crew leader in the field and is responsible for directing daily drilling activities, ensuring compliance with company safety standards, maintaining equipment performance, and mentoring Assistant Drillers. This position involves extensive outdoor work in varying weather conditions, terrain, and operating environments. Frequent travel and overnight stays are required, with work rotations that may include up to fourteen consecutive days in the field before returning home. Travel time is paid at normal hourly rate and a Per Diem is provided for lodging and meals reimbursement. Applicants are required to operate DOT-regulated vehicles across state lines and, therefore, must be at least 21 years of age and maintain a current Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with applicable DOT regulations.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • Valid unrestricted Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening, background check, and DOT physical.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated ability to maintain and repair drilling equipment.
  • Ability to lead crews and work effectively in both independent and team environments.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work 10 to 12-hour shifts in physically demanding environments.
  • Ability to repeatedly lift and carry 50 to 75 pounds without assistance.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions and at surface and underground mining operations.
  • Willingness to travel extensively throughout the United States and work multi-day field assignments.
  • Reliable attendance history and demonstrated commitment to safety and professionalism.

Nice To Haves

  • Three or more years of experience operating wireline diamond core drilling equipment.
  • Experience operating Boart Longyear LF90 drilling rigs.
  • Current MSHA Surface and Underground Miner certification.
  • Experience working in mining, quarrying, mineral exploration, geotechnical, or environmental drilling industries.
  • Advanced knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical, and diesel-powered drilling systems.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and uphold Martin Marietta's commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence.
  • Safely transport, mobilize, operate, and demobilize diamond core drilling equipment, support vehicles, tooling, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Plan and execute drilling programs to meet production, recovery, and quality objectives.
  • Operate wireline core drilling systems and related equipment in accordance with company procedures and industry best practices.
  • Supervise and direct Assistant Drillers during all phases of drilling operations.
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate Assistant Drillers to support skill development and career progression.
  • Collect, document, and safeguard geological core samples and associated field data.
  • Maintain accurate drill logs, maintenance records, inspection reports, safety documentation, and daily operational reports.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and perform preventative maintenance and repairs on drilling rigs, pumps, hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and support equipment.
  • Manage inventory of drilling consumables, tools, spare parts, and support materials.
  • Load, unload, secure, and transport equipment in accordance with DOT requirements and company policies.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work environments at drilling sites, shop facilities, and staging locations.
  • Conduct pre-job inspections, hazard assessments, and safety meetings to ensure regulatory and company compliance.
  • Coordinate with geologists, project managers, mine managers, and other stakeholders to achieve project objectives.
