About The Position

Develops systems and tracks monthly metrics and data on energy and resource use and reductions at all Missouri Botanical Garden campuses. Prepares Greenhouse Gas Inventories and tracking progress for green building certifications. Prepares reports and communications on results. Collaborates with Garden staff from multiple divisions and vendors to collect appropriate information on a regular basis. Works with division team to interpret results and identify steps to expand sustainability efforts in Garden buildings, grounds and programs.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years’ relative experience coordinating tracking of metrics and sustainability related data, including preparing greenhouse gas inventories.
  • Experience in using various sustainability-related software and database programs such as Portfolio Manager; and SIMAP (Sustainability Indicator Management & Analysis Platform) or other greenhouse gas inventory tools to identify best methods to collect and track data is required.
  • Ability to take large amount of data and information and assess what it tells us, then communicate the story the data represents in a collective, easily understood way that describes the impact of that resource use.
  • Must have an interest in environmental issues and be dedicated to fairly representing all sides of such issues.
  • Knowledge and willingness to continue learning about sustainability issues, practices, products and services so that metrics are reviewed for sound biology, environmental and sustainability components.
  • Ability to effectively manage and foster professional working relationships.
  • Comfortable on the phone, particularly with “cold-calls” to vendors, staff and partners.
  • Solid Internet research skills.
  • Solid experience in using the Microsoft suite of software, notably Excel.
  • Exceptionally well organized, and an excellent problem solver.
  • Must be a self-starter, creative, flexible, and possess the ability to effectively multi-task.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate effectively at all levels.

  • Proficient experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and database management programs required.
  • Experience with Portfolio Manager and greenhouse gas inventory software required.
  • Proficient experience using Microsoft suite of programs, including Outlook.
  • Principally operates standard office equipment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must have the ability to pass a background screening and motor vehicle report (MVR) to meet minimum insurance underwriting criteria.
  • Ability to obtain certificates in Building Science Principles from Building Performance Institute and LEED Green Associate from USGBC within one year of employment.
  • Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing).
  • Must be able to work both indoors and out.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • May be required to perform tasks at varying heights (i.e., climb step stools, ladders, etc.).
  • Frequent standing, reaching and bending - 25% or more of the workday, at times, may be spent standing on feet.

Responsibilities

  • Develops lists of all resource use and collections and other metrics to track on behalf of sustainability efforts on Garden sites.
  • Develops and manages multiple information tracking systems for resource use, updates all data on a monthly basis, keeping all systems current throughout the year.
  • Collects data from vendors and staff from multiple divisions using frequent telephone and email communications for gathering information, then inputs all into the tracking systems.
  • Updates all data annually for greenhouse gas inventory, LEED certifications, ENERGY STAR certifications, City of St. Louis Building Energy Performance Standard, Green Dining Alliance certification, etc.
  • Develops new systems to track components to include in next round of inventories and certifications such as carbon impacts of staff commuting and business travel.
  • Researches and tracks carbon benefits of existing and potentially expanded plantings on all Garden locations.
  • Participates with division team to interpret results and suggest steps to expand sustainability efforts in Garden buildings, grounds and programs.
  • Participates as part of the Garden’s Green Team as well as other regional sustainability partner groups.
  • Develops regular written updates on resource use and collection and prepares and provides presentations for meetings, reports, quarterly EWC E-newsletter and blog posts and website.
  • Assists with other project, program and event related tasks as needed by Sustainability staff.
  • Assists with Garden sustainability related internal efforts as needed such as working at Green Living Festivals and Zero Waste tents at large events.
  • Meets expected attendance guidelines.
  • Follows and adheres to established policies and procedures, including but not limited to Employee Handbook, Garden Safety Guidelines and Department Policies.
  • Behaves and communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork and cooperation, within our division and throughout the Garden, with co-workers, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
