About The Position

Under general direction of the Dean, the Coordinator/Landscape Horticulture performs technical work in a college landscape setting, including ordering, receiving, stocking, maintaining, and issuing supplies and equipment. This role manages the physical environment and condition of the Landscape/Horticulture facility and its equipment, including demonstration gardens, greenhouse, lath house, trails, permaculture hill, propagation area, and over 1500 species of living plants. The Coordinator collaborates with staff and faculty to prepare and utilize resources for Horticultural related lab activities, instructional labs/classrooms, and grounds development. They also assist in the planning and implementation of department courses, special projects, and new policies, while fostering student success and ensuring efficient operation. This position involves ordering materials, managing expenditures, coordinating equipment maintenance, training and supervising staff, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The Coordinator may also hire contractors, serve on committees, and perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and qualifying experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
  • Satisfactory completion of at least 12 semester units in laboratory courses in the scientific field to which assigned, or any combination of training and/or experience that could likely provide the desired knowledge and abilities.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, gender, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of the students we serve and sensitivity to and knowledge and understanding of groups historically underrepresented, and groups who may have experienced discrimination.
  • Knowledge of: Laboratory equipment, materials, supplies, and procedures as used in the Landscape/Horticulture program.
  • Knowledge of: Environment and conditions of a horticulture facility and equipment; including gardens, greenhouse, lath house, trails, permaculture hill, propagation various types of living plants.
  • Ability to: Perform routine and analytical determinations.
  • Ability to: Learn factors involved in purchasing supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to: Prepare demonstration and laboratory set-ups.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the physical environment and condition of the Landscape/Horticulture facility and its equipment; including demonstration gardens, greenhouse, lath house, trails, permaculture hill, propagation area, and over 1500 species of living plants.
  • Coordinates with staff the timely preparation use in Horticultural related lab activities.
  • Coordinates the operation of instructional labs/classrooms in collaboration with faculty to maximize effective utilization of resources including the 7.5 acres of grounds.
  • Assists faculty in the planning and implementation of lab activities; including irrigation projects, grounds development and greenhouse improvements or adjustments.
  • Participates in the planning and implementation of department courses, and special projects; implements new or modified Horticulture/Landscape policies and procedures as deemed necessary; fosters student success in the sciences; performs skilled technical duties to assure efficient operation.
  • Coordinates with staff for /landscape instructional labs, and classroom support for assigned field course offerings if applicable; may supervise technicians dedicated to these course offerings.
  • Orders materials, supplies and equipment; researches products, prepares and analyzes bids; requisitions supplies, tools, and equipment for the field-related operations; operates with the district’s financial system.
  • Purchases required items through departmental procedures; receives shipments and verifies contents; maintains, controls and stores a sufficient inventory of supplies and equipment including live and time sensitive materials; may travel to various sites and vendors for supplies and equipment.
  • Coordinates and monitors department expenditures and overall resources for operations; prepares cost estimates for budget recommendation and to ensure compliance within established budget; submits justifications and advocates for resources needed to accomplish Department, College, and District goals.
  • Assists in the development of the departmental budget; including the budget for the Peralta Foundation Landscape Horticulture Trust.
  • Coordinates with division dean as needed to select and install new equipment; maintains equipment in the Greenhouse, Lath house, and related areas of the 7.5 acre facility; performs routine maintenance on a variety of tools and instruments; monitors and coordinates repair of equipment by outside vendors, as needed.
  • Responsible for training, supervision, and direction of related staff such as day, evening or weekend lab technicians; instructional aides; and student workers.
  • Schedule work and assign gardening and grounds-related duties to other classified staff and students assigned to the area.
  • Schedules with district personnel to oversees hazardous waste handling; implements policies and procedures to comply with federal, state, local, and District-wide safety laws, regulations, and guidelines; establishes and enforces safety procedures; recommends safety-related improvements and modifications in horticulture/landscape procedures and operations; inspects and identifies safety hazards, and arranges for correction or remediation.
  • Coordinate with all staff to maintains classroom and storeroom in a clean and orderly condition; cleans and repairs tools and equipment used in the Landscape/Horticulture program.
  • Coordinate with staff to maintains various plants, provide food (plant) and water as needed; assist with the preparation and distribution of plants as required by instructors.
  • Coordinates the maintenance and operations of the Landscape/Horticulture department; submits work orders for routine maintenance needs.
  • May hire and direct independent contractors or vendors regarding issues relevant to the Landscape/Horticulture program.
  • May serve on College or District participatory governance committees that relate to the science department(s) including, but not limited to, Budget, Safety, Facilities, and/or Construction.
  • Performs related work as required.
