About The Position

The Coordinator – Health and Safety is responsible to provide oversight and direction to the safety supervisors assigned to perform noise and dust sampling. In addition, the position is responsible for monitoring compliance with Warrior Met Coal Safety Policies, federal and state mining laws and providing direction and feedback to site management with emphasis on respirable dust and noise compliance. This role is primarily an underground position.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years’ experience in underground coal mining industry.
  • Certified Alabama Mine Foreman/Fire boss or agreement to obtain the qualification at the next available testing opportunity.
  • Certified MSHA instructor for surface and underground, or agreement to obtain the qualification at the next available testing opportunity.
  • Proficient computer skills – ability to type reports, save documents, send emails, etc.
  • Proficient organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and coordinate staff scheduling.
  • Works well with minimal direct supervision.
  • Must be able to wear the required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA.
  • Must be able to do repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle) and have quick reflex movements of the arms and legs as well as good hand to eye coordination.
  • Must be able to lift 25 to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally lift items weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high decibels, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area.

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering/safety or comparable work experience
  • Underground coal mining supervisory experience

Responsibilities

  • Manage the safety supervisors assigned to perform noise and dust sampling.
  • Perform site visits and audits with emphasis on respirable dust and noise compliance.
  • Provide guidance to the safety supervisors under their direction and Warrior Met employees regarding Warrior Met Coal Safety Policies/Best Practices, federal and state mining laws to improve safety/health with emphasis on respirable dust and noise compliance.
  • Reinforce positive behaviors and correct undesired behaviors through coaching and mentoring.
  • Accompany Federal or State Inspectors during their inspections as needed.
  • Evaluate health citations received for appropriate information to contest/litigate citations.
  • Analysis of safety and compliance data to identify trends related to respirable dust and noise.
  • Communicate with the Director of Compliance and Safety Managers to help maintain continuity within WMC regarding safety and compliance activity with emphasis on respirable dust and noise compliance.
  • Help explore and develop programs and/or policies with emphasis on respirable dust and noise compliance.
  • Improve on safety standards by holding safety meetings, conducting safety interactions, and taking corrective action where required.
  • Ensure adherence to State, Federal and Company workplace policies and standard work procedures for risk identification, risk assessment and risk control.
  • Maintain a high level of safety performance through effective communication, monitoring, and revision of standard work procedures.
  • Identify and report safety risks, accidents, incidents, injuries, and property damage at the workplace.
  • Attend and participate in scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Investigate accidents and near misses with a view toward positive action, through training, equipment set-up or equipment repair and report on findings and conclusions.
  • Maintain environmental awareness amongst the workforce by holding meetings and involving the environmental department in related subjects.
  • Ensure adherence to environmental policy, work standards, management plans and regulatory obligations and requirements.
  • Integrate environmental policies, programs, and practices into all activities of the organization.
