About The Position

Apple’s Services Engineering organization (ASE) is seeking experienced distributed systems engineers for its Coordination SRE team. The team develops and contributes to software that manages Apache ZooKeeper and etcd, distributed coordination and state-management systems used by critical Apple internet services. Its systems are deployed at large scale in data centers worldwide and support iCloud and other Apple services.

The role contributes to major parts of Coordination Systems deployment infrastructure, including maintenance automation, monitoring and alerting tools and dashboards, deployment architecture, and upstream database patches focused on stability, performance, and scaling. It involves deep technical engineering across large, cross-organizational projects and collaboration with internal platform customers and colleagues in other locations. Engineers also work with teams across Apple to define metrics and targets, identify optimization opportunities, establish quality guardrails, and deliver responsive services. The position calls for care and rigor in engineering, strong communication and customer focus, and openness to learning and implementing new technologies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
• Understanding of core SRE concepts, including monitoring, alerting, and incident management.
• Proficiency in one or more of Java, Go, or Python.
• Understanding of database concepts, including consistency models, isolation levels, and crash and recovery semantics.
• Knowledge of performance engineering, including design concepts and profile-guided optimization.
• Understanding of operating system concepts, including process scheduling and disk and network I/O performance.
• Knowledge of data-center architecture, including networking topologies, host placement strategies, failure modes, multi-data-center systems, failure domains, and wide-area networking.
• Experience developing critical internet services and/or platform infrastructure.
• Fundamentals of system-level hardware and networking components, including storage devices and controllers, network interfaces, and CPU and memory layout in server-class systems.
• Demonstrated expertise in developing database systems, storage engines, distributed systems, or performance engineering.

Nice To Haves

• Experience working optimally with colleagues based in other locations.
• Prior experience developing or maintaining distributed databases or storage systems is recommended.
• Experience managing services running on Kubernetes.
• Experience with EC2, EBS, and Terraform.

Responsibilities

• Develop and contribute to software for managing Apache ZooKeeper and etcd.
• Contribute to Coordination Systems deployment infrastructure, including maintenance automation, monitoring and alerting tools and dashboards, and deployment architecture.
• Contribute upstream database patches focused on stability, performance, and scaling.
• Engage with internal platform customers with strong communication and customer focus.
• Collaborate with colleagues in other locations as part of a distributed team.
• Work with engineers across Apple to define metrics and targets, identify optimization opportunities, establish quality guardrails, and deliver services and applications that are fluid and responsive.
• Manage services and migrations across bare-metal, virtualized (EC2), and Kubernetes platforms.
