About The Position

VERSANT is seeking an experienced editor with political knowledge to help lead MS NOW Digital’s breaking news efforts on nights and weekends. The role focuses primarily on breaking political news, as well as select trending and other news topics. The editor will help shape MS NOW’s 2028 presidential campaign coverage by identifying key storylines, landing scoops, elevating stories, and coordinating timely coverage with the breaking news and political teams. The position requires excellent news judgment, strong command of journalistic standards, superb writing and editing skills, familiarity with the MS NOW voice and brand, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced newsroom and high-pressure situations.

The position is based in Washington, D.C., and is scheduled for 2 p.m. to 11 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday, with working hours subject to adjustment in the event of breaking news. It is represented by the Writers Guild of America East.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of relevant working experience.
• At least 8 years of experience working in a newsroom environment.
• At least 8 years of experience working in a strictly digital shop.
• Ability to edit quickly and accurately.
• Experience working in breaking news and political news.
• Desire to work in a creative, demanding, and competitive environment.
• Willingness to work in Washington, D.C.
• Unrestricted authorization to work in the United States.

Responsibilities

• Identify storylines and execute timely coverage at night and on weekends.
• Coordinate with the D.C. bureau and breaking news teams, especially around campaign events and scoops.
• Stay informed about the 2028 political campaign and its candidates, track reporter deployment and linear TV plans, and read widely.
• Help lead live blog coverage on primary nights and coordinate the reporting of election results.
• Collaborate across editorial and platform teams to optimize reader engagement.
• Work with platform producers to keep the homepage updated and fresh, and assist with headlines, push alerts, and newsletter production.
• Edit and occasionally write breaking news and enterprise articles on top headlines during evenings and weekends.
• Edit across media platforms while maintaining MS NOW’s tone, voice, and editorial values.
