About The Position

The Cook is responsible for maintaining proper sanitary levels throughout food preparation, service, and storage, as well as of equipment and work areas. This role ensures that interventions are appropriate to meet the needs of the residents and the facility in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations. The Cook follows and executes department practices, procedures, safety regulations, and guidelines, and adheres to policies that effectively maintain the food service program and services for Heritage. The position requires a working knowledge of cooking fundamentals such as stock, soups, braising, roasting, and sautéing. The Cook coordinates the cooking of foods to ensure quality products for established meal service times and prepares meals for residents, employees, and visitors according to written menus, established recipes, production sheets, and food handling procedures. This role also follows Food Serve Safe guidelines and ensures all food handling and sanitation is in conjunction with local and corporate health and sanitation requirements. The Cook inspects kitchen and all service areas daily to ensure they are maintained in accordance with established policies and procedures, and that all hazardous areas are properly identified. The position involves reporting all accidents/incidents to the supervisor, adhering to Universal Precautions and Infection Control Policies, and following OSHA regulations for bending, lifting, and using equipment. The Cook keeps work areas free of hazardous conditions and develops and maintains a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel. Participation in in-service education, on-the-job training, and orientation classes is expected. The Cook must maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information and report to work in compliance with work schedules. The role requires versatility and a willingness to work beyond normal hours to cover various functions and shifts, including weekends, holidays, and emergencies, and may involve driving Heritage vehicles for errands and transportation. Other job-related duties may be requested by the Executive Director.

Requirements

  • High School degree
  • At least 5 years experience in food service as a cook
  • Food Serve Safe Certification
  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
  • Must be able to speak English and communicate effectively, in an understandable manner
  • Must have a valid MA Driver’s License

Responsibilities

  • Maintain proper sanitary levels throughout food preparation, service, and storage, and of equipment and work areas.
  • Implement interventions appropriate to meet the needs of the residents and the facility in accordance with current applicable federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations.
  • Follow and execute department practices, procedures, safety regulations, and guidelines.
  • Adhere to policies that effectively maintain the food service program and services for Heritage.
  • Utilize working knowledge of cooking fundamentals such as stock, soups, braising, roasting, and sautéing.
  • Coordinate cooking of foods to ensure quality products for established meal service times.
  • Prepare meals for residents, employees, and visitors according to written menu, established recipes, production sheets, and food handling procedures.
  • Follow Food Serve Safe guidelines and ensure all food handling and sanitation is in conjunction with local and corporate health and sanitation requirements.
  • Inspect kitchen and all service areas on a daily basis to ensure that the areas, including walls, floors, and surrounding areas and equipment are maintained in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Ensure all hazardous areas are properly identified.
  • Report all accidents/incidents to your supervisor.
  • Adhere to Universal Precautions and Infection Control Policies, including following established hand washing procedures, use of appropriate PPE and supplies when handling infectious materials.
  • Follow established policies governing the use/disposal of PPE and disposal of infectious wastes.
  • Follow OSHA regulations in bending, lifting, and using equipment, wearing and/or using safety equipment and supplies, and use proper mechanics while performing duties (e.g., back brace, mechanical lifts, etc. when moving or lifting heavy objects).
  • Keep work area(s) free of hazardous conditions, i.e., grease/oil spills, excess supplies, equipment, etc., to assure that all established safety rules/regulations are followed at all times.
  • Refer to materials safety when necessary and follow policies governing the use of materials.
  • Develop and maintain a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, and other departments within Heritage, to assure that all functions can be properly planned and maintained to meet the needs of Heritage.
  • Participate in programs designed for in-service education, on the job training, and orientation classes.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information.
  • Report to work in compliance with work schedules, or as directed.
  • Demonstrate versatility and/or willingness to work beyond normal hours to cover various functions and shifts, working weekends, holidays, emergencies, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary.
  • Drive Heritage vehicles for errands, transporting, or other uses as directed.
  • Perform other job-related duties as requested by the Executive Director and/or to meet the needs of the residents and the facility.
