About The Position

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking to hire a Cook II for the Alton Mental Health Center located in Alton, Illinois to direct, instruct and participate in the preparation of foods on an assigned shift. Oversees and instructs the cooks, other dietary staff in the preparing and cooking food. Consults with Dietitian on a regular basis regarding special diets and keeps Cooks’ informed of changes regarding menus, recipes and spreadsheets. Operates standard cooking equipment and maintains a sanitary and safe working condition.

Requirements

  • Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and two (2) years of cooking experience, which provides extensive knowledge of materials, methods and equipment used in preparing food on a large-scale basis.
  • Requires the ability to obtain a valid Food Service Sanitation Certificate issued by the Illinois Department of Public Health or a Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) certification from a program accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Conference for Food Protection (CFP) within 30 days of employment.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.

  • Qualifying state employees in the Upward Mobility Program may complete combinations of specific proficiency tests and training programs leading to a certificate of proficiency in lieu of the stated education and experience requirements for this class.

Responsibilities

  • Directs, instructs and participates in the preparation of foods for the Alton Mental Health Center on an assigned shift.
  • Utilizes a personal computer to generate spreadsheets and reviews recipes.
  • Directs, instructs and participates in the preparation of meats, vegetables and designated foods as required by menus.
  • Prepares reports of daily cooking operations and the results of informal in-service training.
  • Operates standard cooking equipment, i.e., mixers, convection ovens, steamers, kettles, deep fryer, grill, slicer, etc.
  • Directs, instructs and participates in the cleaning of cooking equipment, work area and other equipment to maintain sanitary and safe working conditions.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
