About The Position

The company is looking for a startup-focused Controller with a strong understanding of GAAP fundamentals, strategic instincts, and a builder's mindset. The mission is to own the integrity of the financial close, the accuracy of actuals, and the infrastructure that makes numbers trustworthy and useful for leadership, investors, and auditors. The role emphasizes building lean, durable infrastructure that can scale, with a strategic approach to administrative tasks, automation, and process optimization. Requirements

  • 8–10 years (or equivalent) in accounting or controllership.
  • Experience at a high-growth startup.
  • Foundation in public accounting or audit preferred.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Mastery of GAAP fundamentals, applied in a scaling context.
  • Understanding of what it takes to stay compliant as the company scales.
  • Deep familiarity with ASC 606 in a SaaS or recurring revenue context.
  • Experience building for diligence (venture, strategic, or audit).
  • Ability to design lean processes, document them thoroughly, and resist unnecessary complexity.
  • Collaborative and transparent communication style.
  • Proactive communication when issues arise.
  • Ability to be a trusted partner within finance and to the business.

Nice To Haves

  • Healthcare accounting experience is a plus.
  • Experience with the accounting implications of variable or performance-based compensation structures.
  • Experience with Brex.

Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly and quarterly close process end-to-end: fast, clean, and built to get faster and cleaner over time.
  • Treasury management: banking, runway, and cash controls.
  • Maintain GAAP-compliant financial statements with the depth and documentation to hold up under audit, investor diligence, or similar, while ensuring leaders have specific, clear, and accessible information.
  • Own revenue recognition, with experience in SaaS.
  • Run employee payroll (semi-monthly exempt workforce) in partnership with People Ops.
  • Handle vendor and contractor payments as well as cash impacts of employee payroll such as accruals, employer tax, etc.
  • Maintain and manage the “actuals” infrastructure including Brex and expense reconciliation.
  • Support the finance team in creating a tight feedback loop between forecasts and actuals, treating variance as a useful learning opportunity, but also raising risks effectively as needed.
  • Lead relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and accounting firms to make tax time and expected filings smooth and easy.
  • Support board reporting and investor diligence with well-organized, clearly documented financials that tell a coherent story.
  • Evaluate and maintain accounting systems and tooling; make deliberate choices about what to build, what to buy, and what to leave alone for now.
  • Design and own end-to-end AP/AR processes.
