About The Position

The Controller is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the daily SAF’s finance operations including but not limited to financial reporting, accounts payable, expense processing, payroll, contract management, financial planning and analysis and revenue cycle. In addition to overseeing daily operations, the Controller leads forward-looking financial planning, including multi-year projections, scenario modeling, and sensitivity analysis to support organizational stability and strategic decision-making. This role ensures accurate, timely and actionable financial data is provided to Board, leadership and external third parties, serving as a strategic financial thought partner to the CEO and Executive Team by translating financial data into clear guidance for enterprise-level decisions. The Controller has five direct reports on which she/he is responsible for hiring, training, coaching and developing into a highly functioning finance team. The Controller also oversees financial modeling of key revenue streams, including philanthropic revenue variability and patient revenue cycle performance, to ensure disciplined forecasting and stewardship of SAF’s assets.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or finance; MBA desired.
CPA certification is required.
At least five years’ of progressively responsible experience in a financial controller or manager role, including solid understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), fund accounting and accounting software and payroll systems. Experience with Blackbaud software desired.
Solid understanding of the revenue cycle process in a health clinic includes the valuation of monthly revenue and accounts receivable.

Advanced skills with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, Power BI and Power Point) preferred including advanced financial modeling and scenario analysis capability
Excellent analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills with demonstrated ability to translate complex financial data into clear strategic insights
Proficiency in accounting software and ERP systems
Strong leadership and communication skills including ability to present complex financial data in simple terms both to executive leadership and Board-level audiences
Ability to build solid working relationships within and outside the organization. Be trusted business advisor to leadership team, CFO and peers serving as a strategic financial thought partner in enterprise decision-making
Solid understanding of the revenue cycle process in a health clinic, including the valuation of monthly revenue and accounts receivable with ability to model reimbursement sensitivity and monitor revenue performance trends.
Ability to effectively and efficiently manage time to deliver assignments on time and with accuracy.
Promote continuous learning / improvement mindset to expand knowledge and to improve process within and outside the department.
Strong critical thinking skills desired
Strong ability to develop, train and coach high functioning finance teams.

Nice To Haves

Experience working in a non-profit or community-based social service agency with people experiencing homelessness or poverty desired with appreciation for mission-driven service environments
Solid understanding of philanthropic revenue modeling, including pledge vs. cash forecasting, multi-year campaign projections, endowment growth planning, gift restriction compliance, and campaign accounting standards

Responsibilities

Hire, train, coach and develop a team of 5 staff.
Provide timely and regular feedback on staff performance, including areas of opportunity.
Ensure staff are professional; demonstrate good customer service skills towards key stakeholders. Role model and set the expectation that staff treat all individuals with dignity and respect.
Facilitate regular meetings and team huddles for staff.
Accurate and timely monthly close process completed by the 14th workday of the month. Responsible for distribution of department reports on the 15th workday of each month.
All balance sheet account reconciliations completed before end of the month.
All regulatory reporting completed accurately and submitted on or before due date.
Responsible for payroll and accounts payable processing timely and accurately.
Establish department standard processes, document all processes and train staff on them.
Weekly cash management process to ensure compliance with our investment policy and to ensure proper allocation of funds between cash and investments, including forward-looking cash flow forecasting and liquidity modeling
Preparation of the annual operating and capital budget; and quarterly forecast, including development and revision of multi-year (3–5 year) financial projections and scenario analyses to model revenue volatility, strategic initiatives, and program growth.
Proactively review financial statements for material revenue and expense variances, flag issues in a timely manner, and partner with department leaders to develop corrective action plans and ensure accountability to approved budgets.
Preparation of any external regulatory reporting including but not limited to the annual PPS report and any rate change filings.
Oversee the completion of the annual external audit with no adjustments or management letter comments.
Lead the Revenue Cycle Oversight Group and Capital Appropriation Committee, including accountability for meeting benchmarks, of net patient revenue estimation, accounts receivable analytics, reimbursement sensitivity analysis, and productivity-based financial forecasting.
Training and development of managers and directors in accounting tools, policies and reports with an emphasis on improving financial literacy across the organization and supporting disciplined budget management.
Active participation in the annual strategic planning process including but not limited to the refreshment of the 5-year financial forecast and capital plan ensuring alignment between strategic priorities and long-term financial sustainability
Oversee the maintenance and accuracy of the contract database system for SAF.
Oversee coordination of all insurance policies (excluding employee benefits) to ensure adequate protection of organizational assets and operations.
Evaluate and mitigate financial and operational risks through implementation of internal controls, policy development, and disciplined financial oversight.
