About The Position

Public Health Foundation Enterprises, Inc., dba Heluna Health is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) agency dedicated to enabling population health initiatives to improve the overall well-being of our communities. Heluna Health strives to become the nation’s leader in providing program and support services to optimize population health. Heluna Health partners with academic researchers, government agencies, foundations and private sponsors to offer a suite of services, including contracts and grants management; fiscal sponsorship (providing a financial ‘home’ for researchers, projects and agencies); human resources support; accounting services; real estate/leasing and direct population health program leadership. Reporting to the CFO, the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all general ledger accounting, financial reporting, compliance, core FP&A functions (inclusive of budgeting, forecasting and strategic planning), accounting receivables and cash collections, and accounts payable. The Controller will assist in leading all day-to-day accounting and finance operations of a $200+ million non-profit organization, ensuring that Heluna Health has the systems and procedures in place to support effective program implementation and to be compliant with regulatory and GAAP requirements. This position is required to have a strong understanding and application of accounting principles and should be able to develop and maintain accounting processes and procedures to ensure accurate, timely and relevant financial accounting. This role operates at the intersection of technical accounting excellence and strategic financial planning, ensuring both the integrity of financial data and its effective use in organizational decision-making. The Controller will drive operational rigor, scalable systems, and forward-looking financial insights across a complex fiscal sponsorship model involving many programs, funds and grants. The Controller will lead a team of 12 (with two direct reports) and is responsible for managing the team to ensure that the work is properly allocated and completed in a timely manner. This position will have to manage tight deadlines and a multitude of accounting and finance activities including monthly reconciliations and financial reporting, year-end Single Audit and 403b Audit and IRS Form 990, annual budgets, quarterly forecasts/projections, long range and strategic planning, preparing materials for the Audit and Finance Committees and Board of Directors meetings, while ensuring compliance with policies, processes and procedures.

Requirements

  • Four year bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • Minimum 3 years of public accounting experience and 12-15 years of private industry experience OR 15-20+ years years of progressive experience across technical accounting and FP&A in a medium or large company
  • Minimum of three years as a Controller or equivalent level
  • Active CPA license required
  • Experience in non-profit environment (with a fiscal sponsorship organization preferred) with exposure to the OMB Single Audit
  • Familiarity with government grants and compliance frameworks (e.g. Uniform Guidance)
  • Deep expertise in GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls
  • Strong experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills required (incl. pivot tables & graphs)
  • Experience with Oracle Fusion or similar ERP accounting software
  • Proven experience managing large, multi-level finance teams
  • Ability to bridge technical accounting and strategic finance

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Accounting (general ledger, AP/AR, fixed assets, and monthly close), Financial Reporting and Financial Planning & Analysis functions.
  • Ensure accurate, timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit standards as well as compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Institute, develop and update accounting policies, procedures and documentation that maintain and continuously improve a strong internal control environment to enhance reporting efficiency and accuracy.
  • Lead technical accounting research to ensure that transactions are recorded in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Research accounting standards that may have an impact on the Organization and prepare memos documenting the research, conclusion and impact to the Organization.
  • Lead the preparation of the quarterly financial information and reporting package for presentation to the Audit and Finance Committees, as well as the Board of Directors.
  • Prepare ad hoc analysis for the CFO. Respond to inquiries regarding financial results and special requests as necessary.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process across the organization.
  • Oversee monthly actuals vs budget analysis.
  • Oversee forecasting (i.e. fiscal year and rolling 18-month), variance analysis, and other financial modeling.
  • Deliver clear, actionable financial insights to executive leadership and program stakeholders to support strategic decisions.
  • Partner with department heads to manage budgets, track performance, and plan resource allocation.
  • Build dashboards and KPI reporting to enhance financial visibility across a complex portfolio.
  • Lead annual Single Audit and serve as primary liaison with external auditors.
  • Oversee preparation and review of Form 990 and other regulatory filings.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and grantor requirements.
  • Strengthening risk management practices and internal audit readiness.
  • Ensure quarterly bank compliance activities are performed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assist with the annual 403b Audit.
  • Provide leadership, mentor and develop managers and other team members; foster a high-performance, collaborative culture.
  • Drive cross-training to ensure adequate support and collaboration amongst the team.
  • Sustain and build the team to optimize the skills and experience of each team member. Work with each team member to establish and monitor goals and objectives that align with achieving the department and organization goals.
  • Oversee financial systems (ERP, budgeting tools, reporting platforms) and lead system optimization.
  • Implement automation and process improvements to support organizational growth and to enhance reporting accuracy and efficiency.
  • Ensure data integrity and alignment between accounting and FP&A reporting.
  • Partner with IT on system integrations and upgrades.
