Controller

Koantek•Atlanta, GA

About The Position

Koantek is hiring its first US-based Controller to make its books audit-ready and build an accounting function that can scale from $40M to more than $100M in revenue. The company is Series B, has multiple legal entities and a growing global footprint, and works with an offshore accounting team in India. The accounting data needs improvement, and the company has not yet completed a US financial statement audit. The Controller will own addressing these needs. This is a hands-on builder role in the first year, shifting toward leadership as the team and systems mature. The Controller reports to the VP, Finance & Accounting and leads the India accounting team. The position is fully remote for a US-based employee, with regular overlap with India (IST) hours. The first-year mandate is to establish a reliable monthly close based on trustworthy data and achieve a clean first US audit. The role owns close and reporting, audit and compliance, revenue accounting, multi-entity consolidation, technical accounting, internal controls, systems and data, tax and statutory coordination, treasury support, and team leadership. The Controller will manage the India Accounting Director and, through that director, a five-person team covering AP, AR, payroll, FDE/services revenue accounting, and close.

Requirements

  • Active or inactive CPA.
  • 10 or more years of experience, including at least three years at a Big 4 or national audit firm.
  • At least four years in a Controller or Assistant Controller role at a venture-backed company with $25M–$150M in revenue.

  • Hands-on multi-entity consolidation experience, including intercompany and FX across at least one non-US entity.
  • Strong ASC 606 experience, ideally involving services and recurring revenue.
  • Experience managing offshore or distributed accounting teams; India experience is preferred.

  • Ability to bring order to ambiguity without waiting for perfect information.
  • Commitment to documenting policies, close checklists, and memos.
  • Ability to develop people and raise bad news early.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with a professional services, consulting, or data/cloud partner business model, including time-and-materials, fixed-fee, or milestone billing.
  • ERP implementation or migration experience with NetSuite, Sage Intacct, or similar.
  • Exposure to India statutory requirements, transfer pricing, or a Big 4 India relationship.
  • Experience leading finance through an exit to a PE or strategic buyer, including quality of earnings, diligence data rooms, and purchase agreement support.
  • Comfort using data tools such as SQL and BI dashboards to fix data at the source.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with RevOps, FP&A, and systems owners to reconcile revenue, billing, and cost data to the general ledger.
  • Select and onboard an audit firm with the VP, Finance & Accounting; prepare the PBC list, build opening balances, and lead the first US GAAP audit toward an unqualified opinion.
  • Clean up historical books, including reconciling and restating prior periods as needed, fixing the chart of accounts and entity structure in the GL, and resolving intercompany balances.
  • Own multi-entity consolidation, including intercompany eliminations, FX translation, and transfer pricing documentation in partnership with tax advisors.
  • Lead and develop the India accounting team in partnership with the India Accounting Director, setting ownership and review standards and providing US GAAP training across AP, AR, payroll, revenue, and close.
  • Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close; prepare consolidated US GAAP financial statements, board and investor reporting packages, and flux and variance analyses.
  • Manage the audit firm relationship, PBC delivery, audit adjustments, technical memos, and lender and investor covenant reporting.
  • Own ASC 606 policy and execution across services, subscriptions, and partner/reseller arrangements, including deferred and unbilled revenue and contract reviews with Sales and Legal.
  • Maintain entity-level books, intercompany agreements and settlements, eliminations, FX, and transfer pricing support.
  • Develop technical accounting policies and memos for ASC 606, ASC 842, ASC 718, capitalized software, and convertible or preferred equity.
  • Design a right-sized internal control framework, including segregation of duties, approval matrices, and reconciliation and review sign-offs, without SOX-level overhead.
  • Own the GL and close tooling and help lead ERP evaluation and selection with the VP, Finance & Accounting; oversee integrations with billing, payroll, expense, and CRM systems.
  • Coordinate external tax advisors on federal, state, sales/use, and international filings, and statutory audits for foreign entities, including India.
  • Support treasury through cash reconciliation, cash-forecasting inputs, and bank and payment controls.
  • Manage the India Accounting Director and, through them, a five-person team; develop the hiring plan, performance standards, and US GAAP and audit training.
  • Prepare journal entries and reconciliations when needed, as well as review the team's work.
  • Within the first 30 days, assess the books, team, systems, and entity structure and deliver a written gap assessment and audit-readiness plan to the VP, Finance & Accounting.
  • Within the first 60 days, engage an audit firm, establish the close checklist and ownership matrix, and clean up top balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Within the first 90 days, achieve a consistent close in 15 business days or fewer, document the revenue recognition policy, and reconcile intercompany balances across entities.
  • Within six months, achieve a close in 10 business days, complete opening balances and prior-period cleanup, and have audit fieldwork underway.
  • Within 12 months, achieve an unqualified audit opinion, a close in 7–10 business days, documented key controls, and clear ownership within the India team with fewer review corrections.
