About The Position

The Controller provides oversight, management, and ultimate accountability for the Company’s accounting function. The role ensures accurate and reliable financial reporting, maintains a rigorous internal control environment, and turns financial data into actionable business insights. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller manages key financial operations, oversees the Accounting Specialist, and supports monthly close, financial reporting, tax compliance, and audit processes. The position combines hands-on accounting expertise, analytical thinking, attention to detail, and cross-functional collaboration to maintain accurate financial information and improve financial-process efficiency. The role is based in Durham, North Carolina, in a hybrid format. The Controller works onsite at the Durham office three days per week, Tuesday through Thursday. Work includes substantial desk and computer time, reviewing financial information, and participating in meetings and cross-functional collaboration, including in-person meetings and communication through video calls and other digital platforms. The position may require lifting up to 50 pounds and performing physical tasks such as climbing or using a ladder as needed.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
5 to 7+ years of progressive accounting experience.
Strong understanding of GAAP and accounting best practices.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Proven ability to manage multiple priorities independently and meet deadlines.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and departments.
Proficiency with accounting systems such as Sage Intacct, CashFlow360/Bill.com, or similar platforms.
Advanced Excel skills and experience with financial reporting tools.

Nice To Haves

CPA strongly preferred.
Experience with inventory accounting and a manufacturing environment strongly preferred.
Knowledge of sales tax regulations for e-commerce companies preferred.

Responsibilities

Manage the general ledger and month-end close, including journal entries, accruals, and adjustments, and ensure timely, accurate financial reporting.
Manage accounting for inventory, cost of goods sold, and product cost data.
Establish, implement, and enforce corporate accounting policies, internal controls, and standard operating procedures to mitigate operational and financial risks.
Serve as the primary liaison for annual audits.
Oversee Accounts Payable processes and ensure timely, accurate transactions and vendor communications.
Reconcile Accounts Receivable.
Calculate capitalized software costs.
Manage and reconcile prepaid expenses.
Review and correct general ledger expense coding as needed.
Administer company credit cards and monitor spending.
Maintain daily cash forecasts and support monthly cash reconciliations.
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
Ensure compliance with sales tax, franchise tax, and corporate income tax filings.
Oversee and review the work of the Accounting Specialist.
Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
Conduct product margin reviews and collaborate on pricing decisions.
Collaborate with Operations, Supply Chain, E-Commerce, and other teams to ensure data accuracy and alignment.
Provide financial insights and ad hoc reporting to leadership.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
