About The Position

The Finance Team is responsible for both the Stratford Hall School Society and the Stratford Hall Foundation. The Controller is an integral position ensuring the school is fiscally responsible, compliant with all financial and statutory regulations and reporting on a timely basis. This role would be well-suited for a candidate looking to step up from a senior accountant role and mentor a junior accountant. Working as a team to provide exemplary service to our community, this role requires understanding and coverage of all roles and responsibilities for our finance team.

Requirements

  • CPA designation and Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or similar
  • 7-10 years’ experience with full cycle accounting
  • Experience in public practice strongly preferred
  • Experience working with external financial auditors
  • Understanding of Fund Accounting for Not-for-Profit Organizations
  • Experience with complex reconciliations
  • Financial software proficiency (Blackbaud Financial Edge or Sage intact preferred)
  • Experience designing and implementing internal controls
  • Understanding of payroll regulations
  • Advanced MS Excel proficiency
  • Strong organizational, communication, administrative and interpersonal skills
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on quality and accuracy
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team

Responsibilities

  • Supervises Junior Accountant ensuring weekly and monthly tasks are done accurately and on time
  • Review and post AP and GL entries prepared by the Junior Accountant
  • Record monthly and recurring general journal entries including but not limited to unearned revenue, miscellaneous bank entries, loan payments, interest accruals
  • Reconcile banks and other accounts as needed
  • Prepare quarterly reports for both the School and Foundation
  • Analyze monthly variances and suggest potential cost saving initiatives
  • Reconcile fund balances, interfund transfers and related party balances
  • Enter budget data into the accounting system and build report templates
  • Prepare and analyze quarterly variance reports for all department heads
  • Lead preparation for the annual audit and primary liaison with the audit team
  • Review and file GST returns
  • Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Maintaining sufficient cash balances to meet operational requirements
  • Reconcile donations received with the Advancement department to ensure all donations are accounted for accurately
  • Assist our Parent Association with reporting requirements for their AGM, Gaming application and year end reporting
  • Secondary Payroll review for the DFO
  • Coverage of junior accounting duties including accounts payable
  • Coverage of payroll and accounts receivable for the Payroll & Personnel Services Manager
  • Other responsibilities as needed
